    America’s Got Talent: Holiday Spectacular

2016-1121-agtxmas-responsive-5x4-koAmerica’s Got Talent celebrated the holidays by bringing back what was billed as everyone’s favorite acts from all eleven seasons. The one caveat was that they didn’t get to perform the routines they do every day…the ones that made them famous. They were asked to perform holiday-themed routines. For singers and musicians this is easy. There are tons of holiday standards that are available.

But America’s Got Talent isn’t just about singers. A staple of the show is the Variety Acts. This is where the creativity of the performers (and their teams) becomes important. Should the acts create something unique or should they just put a Santa hat on and call it Christmas? Superstar Ventriloquist Terry Fator won the First Season of AGT with a combination of his unique comedy, puppets and routines. He merely brought out his Elvis character and sang Blue Christmas. He did it beautifully but still, no new ground was broken. The Olate Dogs did their regular act wearing red and green dog sweaters while their trainers wore Santa Suits. The Regurgitator vomited ornaments for a miniature Christmas tree and the daredevil Professor Splash did a seasonally appropriate dive into a pool of eggnog. All of these were GREAT acts but again, we have seen these acts do similar things in the past.

There was still hope for originality in the various magic acts participating. There is a quick video appearance by Jon Dorenbos doing a trick in the Philadelphia Eagles locker room. Jon was in Season 11 and he performed a sleight of hand card trick about four Jacks trying to get off the Naughty list and on to the Nice list. Close up magic is always hard to do on TV, but Jon’s personality and showmanship are what sells it. Jon’s appearance is brief but is shows how Jon easily could have won if more people that loved magic had supported him.

The Clairvoyants were the runners up of Season 11 and are currently part of The Illusionists – Turn of the Century on Broadway. Their holiday routine was a recreation of the Christmas Carol story using their mentalist magic. While most people would have thought that they would cast Simon Cowell as Scrooge, they chose Howie Mandell instead. The duo correctly identified where Howie Scrooge put various items and then they revealed the text from the Charles Dickens story which matched exactly with what Howie did during the act.

Piff The Magic Dragon, Penn and Teller, and Mat Franco get jammed into one time slot near the end of the show. They are three great acts that just didn’t jell like you would hope. Penn and Teller worked with Piff and they presented themselves as The Three Wise Guys Men. This routine proved how difficult it is to create original, unique and memorable holiday routines. A highlight was watching Teller produce the dove…Clearly Johnny Thompson worked with him on this bit.

Mat got to do his magic trick alone, but it didn’t feel that impressive or interesting for him. Mat does make the smart move of directly involving Simon because Simon’s reaction to magic that fools him is incredible.

After watching this special we would like to see Penn and Teller: Fool Us do a special and bring back the guys that fooled them to do something with a holiday theme. If not Fool Us maybe the producers of Wizard Wars will bring that program back for a Christmas Special.

  • America’s Got Talent Returns with Strong Magic

America’s Got Talent Returns with Strong Magic

AGT 2016America’s Got Talent returned to NBC last night and the season 11 premiere featured new judge Simon Cowell joining the panel. Simon created the Got Talent franchise and is a regular judge on Britain’s Got Talent. Mel B, Howie Mandel and Heidi Klum have all returned and the contestants continue to be outrageous as well as highly talented.

Hiroki HaraMagic enthusiasts were thrilled to see not one but two strong magic acts do very well. There was also a third act that magicians would also love and is considered an affiliated art.

Hiroki Hara made a dramatic appearance with his routine using the Holotive Hologram effect screen. Hiroki Hara is a veteran of the World Magic Seminars Teen Competition and was featured in the documentary Make Believe. That documentary chronicled his winning that competition. Lance Burton often refers to him as one of his “kids”.

Hara got the crowd on their feet. He is from Japan and said it was his biggest dream to perform for them. Howie said that the performance was gorgeous and that now he believes in magic. Mel B said she felt like she was watching a Vegas show and she absolutely loved it. Heidi loved it too and Simon said that Hara turning into a pigeon was incredible. Hara Hiroki got four yesses.

Next is Thommy Ten and Amelie Van Tass who perform as The Clairvoyants. The Duo won the 1st prize for Mentalism last year at FISM 2015 in Rhiminy, Italy and have recently been a part of the Illusionists 1903 tour.

They begin by asking Heidi to bring her purse and come to the stage. Amelie had Heidi check her ears for an earpiece and check the blindfold to make sure it’s secure. Then they have Heidi put something in Thommy’s hand. Amelie correctly identified that the item is lipstick and went on to reveal the number of the shade. Then Thommy has the audience pull out objects. He picked up a phone and Amelie identified it as a white iPhone with an AT&T carrier. Then Thommy allowed Simon to inspect for hidden mics.

Thommy Ten and AmelieThommy takes an item from Howie and his partner once again identified it as eyedrops eye drops…she even reads the expiration date. The crowd loved them. Howie says that’s the most amazing thing he’s seen ever. He says it’s amazing. Mel B says it’s like the Twilight Zone. Heidi says she likes it because she knows she’s not in on it. Simon says she’s a witch and that’s the only explanation and says it’s amazing too. Simon wants to take her to Vegas to clean up. They get four yesses and will move on.

Next up is a couple Ryan Stock and AmberLynn. Ryan is an accomplished sleight of hand artist and magician but you wouldn’t know that from the act he performed on America’s Got Talent.

They began with a pair of scissors that Howie inspects and identifies as real. Ryan then shoves them up his nose. Then he says that’s not the gross part. Then he opens and closes them and says that’s how you get the nose hairs at the very back. Then he pulls them out and licks them.

Ryan Stock and AmberLynnAfter that he pulled out a meat hook and proceeds to put it up his nose and out his mouth. Then AmberLynn hangs a medicine ball on the end of the meat hook (which is still going into his nose and out of his mouth) and he swings it. It’s horrifying and yet amazing and the judges hide their eyes.

Finally, Ryan hangs a strap onto the meat hook and lifts himself into the air. Heidi gave him the X but the crowd loved it and Simon gave his first standing ovation of the evening. Simon laughed and says that’s fantastic. Mel B says she loves this kind of act but can’t watch it. Howie says he loved it and it’s a yes. Mel B says she needs to help to vote and the crowd cheers so she says yes. Heidi says no she didn’t like it but Simon apologizes to America but then also says yes so Ryan Stock and AmberLynn will move on.

Stay tuned, the previews for upcoming auditions of AGT promise more great magic and top name magicians.

    Piff Moves To AGT Finals

Piff-the-Magic-Dragon-Americas-Got-Talent-SemifinalsPiff The Magic Dragon’s unique brand of deadpan comedy and magic once again “slayed” the judges on Tuesday’s America’s Got Talent Semifinals. Piff is the magician-comedian who, some say, wears a dragon costume. We have to note however that he actually claims to be a REAL magic performing dragon that performs naked. His sidekick, a dog named Mr. Piffles, is really a dog in a dragon costume.

When Neil Patrick Harris was a guest judge he used the Golden Buzzer pick during the Judge Cuts round to move Piff to the semifinals. All four judges felt his semifinal performance should have won him a spot in next week’s finals. We are happy to announce that fans of AGT voted Piff into the finals and he will compete against magician Derek Hughes and mentalist Oz Pearlman next week. That means that for the second year in a row the America’s Got Talent Finals will include three different magic acts. Season Nine’s finalists included David and Leeman, Mike Super and Mat Franco who won the contest.

So, what did Piff pull off this time? Well, it’s actually hard to explain. It involved a toaster, multiple card tricks, and an unexpected “trip” to Las Vegas to pick up Mr. Piffles. The judges were left both entertained and amazed, and they all gave a standing ovation.

Howard Stern said, “Let’s talk finals. Now we’re cookin’. I told you I wanna see Gary the comedian in the finals; the second act of the night I wanna see in the finals is Piff the Magic Dragon.” He went on to tell the contestant, “You were bringing your A game tonight. For me, you’ve got to go to the next level. America must vote for you. You’re phenomenal.” America DID vote for Piff…Now we will see what happens next week.

    America’s Got Magic Semifinals 1

As we have shared with you here throughout the summer, America’s Got Talent has celebrated magic and magicians. The contestants performed on Tuesday night. Derek Hughes was the first act announced that would go to the finals. Derek was still wearing the pajamas he wore onstage the night before. Here is his act from Tuesday night.

There was a time when we would have been satisfied that just ONE magician had made it to the finals. The next act that was told that they would be moving on was Mentalist Oz Pearlman.

    AMERICA’S GOT TALENT

It’s clear that the producers of America’s got Talent can spot a trend. The Art of Magic has become popular again. Because of this, magicians are not only getting respect from the judges but they are also getting a fair chance to perform their acts. For years magicians were invited on the show only to be ridiculed and told “I’ve seen that before”. Other times the judges (and the producers) would insist that a successful magician “go bigger” and work beyond their expertise and their comfort zone. Last year the magicians were allowed to do their acts and work inside their comfort zones. Yes, they were still challenged to “bring their ‘A’ game” but that was just encouraging them to be better, not bigger. The results were obvious, Mat Franco won and all the other magicians on the program did very well.

We did a story on how America’s Got Talent has found a new respect for the Art of Magic a couple of weeks ago. That article featured the first four magicians that auditioned on the show this year. You can read article and see those videos here.

Two weeks ago Michael John did the “Kiss Card Trick” with Mel B. This is how that audition went.

Mat Franco won America’s Got Talent in 2014. Many other magicians also did very well in the competition with three other magic acts appearing in the finals.  It only stands to reason that Magicians are going to show up for the 2015 edition of the hit television show.

The first week brought us Piff The Magic Dragon who not only charmed the judges with his magic but with his character. We especially appreciated the fact that Piff stayed in character throughout the interview after his act. “Dragons Like Snacks”.

The second week of the competition seemed almost like a gala show at a magic convention. First we have Derek Hughes doing the card trick your mother warned you about.
