A new video of a Chicago-area magician transforming a rose petal into an egg is baffling the internet and non-magicians are finding that it’s impossible to tell how the magic happens.

In a live segment on WGN TV Illusionist Jeanette Andrews performed one of her latest tricks and even the reporter standing inches away couldn’t figure out how she did it. The station’s Jeff Hoover helped her set up the trick and then watched in amazement as she somehow seems to transform a rose petal into an egg.

Jeanette starts by asking Jeff to pick a random stem from a bunch of white roses. She is seen smelling the flower and then plucking a supposed random petal from it and placing it in a glass. She swirls the petal around for a few seconds – looking intensely at the glass as she does so – and then suddenly an egg seems to appear in the glass. To make sure people know the egg is real, she then takes it out and cracks it open on the side of the glass as Jeff can heard saying “woah” in the background. Just before the clip ends the presenter can’t help but crack out a joke as he says: “That was an egg-cellent trick.”

Jeanette Andrews has been performing magic since she was in preschool, so she has had quite some time to perfect her moves. Just months after watching a Siegfried and Roy TV special, a 4-year-old Andrews was performing magic for her class. Two years later, she staged her first paid gig. Since then, she and magic have been virtually inseparable. Now she is 25 years old and she regularly performs her magic for both corporate and casual audiences. Her show is called Thresholds and it blends elements of philosophy, science and art in unique theatrical presentations.

   It is great to see more women in Magic; Magic history is replete with female performers but they have been a bit scarce prior to the late 90’s.

   I find it a bit strange and disheartening that magicians should reveal the fact in public that they were/are looking for the moment in which the ‘sleight’ takes place. Magicians should simply refer to it as Magic!

   Their desire to ‘spot the sleight’ and discus it should be left to private discussions among fellow performers.
